I was digging my old posts over at mitchteryosa.com and stumbled on my 4 year old post about Malu Fernandez. Remember her? If you are an OFW, her name will definitely ring a bell. 4 years ago she said, wrote and had this article published:

As all of you know I have just returned from a wonderful holiday in the Mediterranean. To cut on some costs for this impromptu vacation I was forced to fly economy class which I absolutely do not wish on my worst enemy. I was, however, encouraged by my travel agent to try out Emirates since it won the best economy class, so with great trepidation I flew on Emirates via Dubai, completely forgetting that Dubai is the hub for all the Filipino migrant workers. Call me whatever you like but when you are trapped in economy class that is filled to the brim with migrant workers the smell gets a little funky after nine hours of flying.

How long have you been serving the said foreign country? Humigit kumulang Siyam na taon na ako ditto sa bansang Palau.

How did you land there? Sa tulong ng isang dating kaopisina at kaibigan, nagkaruon ako ng oportunidad na makapagtrabaho sa sa ibang bansa na kahit sa panaginip ay hindi ko pinangarap dahil na rin sa mga iiwan ko sa Pilipinas.

Was it your choice or you didn’t have any choice but to leave and work abroad? Pinili ko to, ang tutuo maayos naman ang trabaho ko sa Pilipinas bilang isang Programmer sa isang Resort sa Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) pero dahil sa lumalakeng gastusin sa pang-araw-araw at para na rin sa kinabukasan ng aking Pamilya, Pinili ko na to kahit sa maikling panahon man lang.
