Part II : Human Trafficking Victim in Malaysia

The same day after the interview and phone patch with Consul General Renato Villa, I received an SMS from Lovely that a certain Mr. Ariel Esparto was trying to call her, an official from the Philippine Embassy in KL. Call me paranoid, but of course, I had to be sure whether we are dealing with the right and trusted person. I, then passed the message to Usec Toots’ team member and he verified that Mr. Esparto works for the Embassy.
Believe me, since the day I got the bad news from Lovely, I have been restless and always on the phone doing follow ups. I am so glad that Bantay OFW Team has been patient with me.
At half past 10pm, Friday, March 2, I received two consecutive SMS from Lovely saying:
- Te, nasa kalsada kami kasi may magchecheck daw na taga Immigration, para daw kunwari di kami nagtatrabaho. Takbuhan! Kakatakot!
- Te, nasa Paparich resto ako, nagpapalipas oras kaya lang di ako makatakas, may bantay. Kasama si boss.
I passed the messages on to Mr. Esparto and ConGen Villa which I later on found out that Mr. Esparto, in fairness, called my cousin’s mobile phone but was advised to take a cab instead and go to the Embassy. I understand the distance from the Embassy to where my cousin works, if they have no service, but how do you expect someone in my cousin’s shoes to do that considering that she’s very new in KL.
I also took the liberty to call ConGen Villa to see if he can send people for back up, at least to check the location, and how other OFWs are doing. Our conversation went like this:
Me: Good evening po Sir! Sensya na po if I took the liberty of calling you at this hour.
I was getting pissed but I tried to be calm.
ConGen Villa: Nakuuuu!
I hung up with disappointment ‘coz I know that, that conversation did not make any sense.
Days passed already. I continuously advised my cousin not to lose hope, that we are doing our best with the help of Bantay OFW Team. Each time I have updates from Lovely, I pass it on to them.
